چکیده

Visual search is an integral component in many human activities. The eye movements produced during such activities can provide valuable information about people’s cognitive processes. This research investigates, with detailed eye movement data analysis and computational cognitive modeling, the perceptual, strategic, and oculomotor processes people use to visually search. A cognitive model is evolved in a principled manner based on eye movement data, past modeling efforts, and recent psychological literature. In the model, re-usable, parsimonious, local strategies interact with perceptual-motor constraints to predict the bulk of the eye movement data, including aspects of the data that appear to require task-specific global strategies in addition to fixationto-fixation local strategies. The analysts evolve a base level model with a random strategy into a robust and reusable model with a flexible strategy that could work with a wide range of visual stimuli.

Idiosyncratic characteristics of saccadic eye movements when viewing different visual environments

Eye position was recorded in different viewing conditions to assess whether the temporal and spatial characteristics of saccadic eye movements in different individuals are idiosyncratic. Our aim was to determine the degree to which oculomotor control is based on endogenous factors. A total of 15 naive subjects viewed five visual environments: (1) The absence of visual stimulation (i.e. a dark r...

Area Activation 1 Running Head: AREA ACTIVATION Advancing Area Activation towards a General Model of Eye Movements in Visual Search

Many of our everyday tasks require us to perform visual search. Therefore, an adequate model of visual search is an indispensable part of any plausible approach to modeling integrated cognitive systems that process visual input. Due to its quantitative nature, absence of freely adjustable parameters, and support from empirical research results, the Area Activation Model is presented as a promis...

Modeling Search for People in 900 Scenes: A combined source model of eye guidance.

How predictable are human eye movements during search in real world scenes? We recorded 14 observers' eye movements as they performed a search task (person detection) in 912 outdoor scenes. Observers were highly consistent in the regions fixated during search, even when the target was absent from the scene. These eye movements were used to evaluate computational models of search guidance from t...

Coordination of eye and head movements during reading.

PURPOSE There is little information regarding the characteristics of head movements during reading. This study was undertaken to investigate horizontal and vertical head movements during two different reading tasks. METHODS Head and eye movements were monitored with an infrared pupil and head tracker in 15 subjects during repeated reading of text from an A4-sized card and a card 90 degrees wi...

Predicting rhesus monkey eye movements during natural-image search

There are three prominent factors that can predict human visual-search behavior in natural scenes: the distinctiveness of a location (salience), similarity to the target (relevance), and features of the environment that predict where the object might be (context). We do not currently know how well these factors are able to predict macaque visual search, which matters because it is arguably the ...
